Menopause

“The Change of Life” refers to menopause where female reproductive capability ceases, hormone levels change and subsequent physical changes ensue.  Suzanne Summers refers to these changes as the Seven Dwarves of Menopause: Itchy, Bitchy, Sleepy, Sweaty, Bloated, Forgetful, and All Dried Up!  While it’s been a taboo subject for generations, today it’s better understood and more openly discussed than ever before.

In a nutshell, menopause is the end of a woman’s menstruation and fertility, defined as occurring 12 months after a women’s last menstrual period.  It is the time when the ovaries produce less estrogen and progesterone.

Earlier generations believed the symptoms associated with menopause were “all in their head” and therefore, were reluctant to talk about it.  Apart from the absence of periods, women may also notice other changes and symptoms such as hot flashes/night sweats, low libido, mood swings, weight gain, foggy thinking, sleeplessness and vaginal dryness.  Relief is available.
