Supersized Sugary Drinks Banned

New York City passed the first US ban of over-sized drinks in its latest controversial step to stop this obesity epidemic.  The health board outlawed sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces everywhere they are sold except groceries and convenient stores .  Opponents feel the issue is an infringement on personal freedom.

Considering our nation is fatter than ever and this obesity epidemic is now seriously affecting our children, we certainly give credit to those willing to, at least, start to address the issue and make the tough, unpopular decisions to help improve our health.   Obesity has many deadly complications and can be argued to be a leading cause of death with diabetes, cancer, hypertension and heart disease all obesity complications.   A recent Saturday Night Live skit about China manufacturing asked for an example of something that America makes well – the response was “Is Diabetes considered a product?”.

According to Health Commissioner, Thomas Farley, “shrinking only one sugary drink per person every two weeks from 20 ounces to 16 ounces, New Yorkers could collectively prevent 2.3 million pounds gained per year.  This would slow the obesity epidemic and prevent much needless illness.”

Portion control is a proven method to help with weight management.  The chip industry already provides portion-controlled 100 calorie packages.  Can you imagine what would happen if the fast food industry made available full-sized chip bags as a side option?  Having to get up and purchase a second drink will make you, at least, stop and think!   It also allows time for your body to signal it is full.  Awareness of ‘what’ and ‘how much’ we eat is essential to fight this obesity epidemic.

Health Care Reform?  Eliminate obesity and the money we save can easily provide medicare for many generations to come.
